A private taxi will collect you from your Queenstown accommodation and take you to the meeting place of your awaiting helicopter on the Glenorchy-Queenstown highway. Start your journey by flying over Mt Nicholas Station which you will visit later in the day by road and the Mavora Lakes conservation area. Mavora is a remarkable landscape of mountains, lakes & beech forest. Take in the view of Lake Te Anau before landing high up at Mt Luxmore.
From Luxmore Hut, start your great exploration of the Kepler Mountains alpine tussock land. You have the option of hiking further toward the summit with outstanding mountain views opening at every turn before returning to the hut. From Luxmore Hut it is a 3 hour descent to Lake Te Anau, firstly above bush line for panoramic views south to the coast and north up the length of the lake. The trail will lead you into an ancient beech forest covered in lichen and, as you descend, notice the change in vegetation and the increase in birdlife. When you reach the sandy beach of Brod Bay you will be rewarded with a boat trip across the jewel clear water of Lake Te Anau back to the township.
After a comfort stop you will travel toward Lake Wakatipu through high country sheep and cattle stations. This area is “off the beaten track” and hence called the Backroad. A sharp contrast from the heights of Mt. Luxmore the scenes of rolling tussock-covered hills and gin-clear rivers provide an ideal way to unwind after your walk. A stop along the back road to enjoy a freshly prepared gourmet picnic, filled with some of Fiordland’s best offered culinary treats & local wine. When you reach Mt. Nicholas Station your private vessel will be waiting to escort you across Lake Wakatipu and back to Queenstown.
Includes: Helicopter flight / Taxi transfers to & from your Queenstown accommodation / Personal Tour Guide / Snacks & Gourmet Picnic Lunch / Private transfer via backroad / Private Lake Wakatipu vessel back to Queenstown.
